Yamabiko Corporation signs joint research and development contract for e-fuel demonstration experiment with eSep Inc.
Yamabiko Corporation (“the Company”) recently signed a joint research and development contract for synthetic fuel with eSep Inc., a Kyoto-based startup, aimed at realizing carbon neutrality. Through this joint R&D, our goal is to make the engines installed on outdoor power equipment (OPE), the Company's main products, carbon neutral.
eSep possesses the nano-ceramic separation membrane manufacturing knowhow needed to make ceramic functional separation membranes and various other types of functional separation membranes. They are a Kyoto-based startup that seeks to use this technology to achieve easy, eco-friendly and highly efficient separation in order to produce synthetic fuels, reduce the costs and energy involved in the process of using them, reduce CO2 and create a carbon neutral society.
Yamabiko Corporation has a policy of aiming for carbon neutrality even in the use of internal combustion engines, and we have been focusing for a while on synthetic fuels (e-fuels) that use renewable energy. In this joint R&D, eSep will be in charge of synthesizing the e-fuel while the Company will be in charge of demonstration experiments using OPE engines. Through this joint R&D, we aim to draw out the challenges involved in using e-fuels in OPE engines and resolve them and thereby develop an e-fuel with optimized characteristics.
Additionally, for the e-fuel synthesizing process, in addition to the synthesis method using hydrogen and recovered CO2 generated from water electrolysis carried out using renewable energy, we are also planning to make efficient use of woody biomass resources using leftover wood from forestry, which is currently unutilized. The latter in particular is very closely related to our OPE business area, as shown in the image below, and we believe it has much potential to allow us to practice our corporate essence which states that we will "Create the bridge that bonds people and nature with the future" and has great social significance.
As green technology development investments accelerate worldwide, Yamabiko Corporation, with our compact engine development and manufacturing technology, and eSep, with its original separation membrane manufacturing technology, will collaborate to contribute to the advancement of carbon neutrality. Moreover, when it comes to the Company’s compact engine technology, we will aim for even greater efficiency and incorporate the use of e-fuels in an effort to help resolve social issues.
We are also conducting product experiments using high concentration ethanol fuel, and evaluations such as engine performance, bench endurance tests and real operating experiences are complete. If we use bio-based ethanol, we believe this may become another way of contributing to carbon neutrality just like the e-fuel initiative above. With the Company's four significant beliefs (Offer the best products and service in the world/Support people and companies committed to sustaining nature and the environment/Lead the industry through creation of new markets and customers, ultimately resulting in growth for tomorrow/Provide a sense of fulfillment for all persons affiliated with Yamabiko) engraved in our hearts, through this joint R&D, ethanol and various other means, we will press on with efforts to produce new technologies.
